A Stroll Along Margate’s Historic Harbour Arm
Margate’s Harbour Arm is one of the town’s most atmospheric vantage points—an elegant stone pier stretching into the sea, offering uninterrupted sunlight and a unique perspective on this beloved coastal town. Built between 1812 and 1815, the Harbour Arm has long been a defining part of Margate’s seafront identity.

A Pier Steeped in History
Constructed in the early 19th century, the Harbour Arm was originally engineered as a protective stone pier supporting Margate’s busy maritime activity. The lighthouse at its end—now a familiar silhouette—was rebuilt in 1955, adding to the layered history of this small but significant structure.
Just beyond the base of the pier stands Droit House, built in 1812 and historically linked to the development of Margate’s pier and harbour. Today, it serves as the visitor information centre, welcoming guests to a harbour rich with heritage.
Art, Light, and Famous Footsteps
Margate has inspired artists for centuries, none more famous than J.M.W. Turner, who first visited the town in 1786 and returned repeatedly throughout his life. At the end of the Harbour Arm stands the bronze “Shell Lady,” named for Turner’s companion Mrs. Booth, whose home once overlooked the sea nearby.
Overlooking the bay is the Turner Contemporary art gallery—one of the UK’s leading contemporary art spaces—situated right at the beginning of the Harbour Arm, echoing Turner's deep connection to Margate’s light and seascapes.
A Modern Promenade With Coastal Character
Today, the Harbour Arm blends this rich history with a relaxed, modern coastal charm. Its south-facing walkway soaks in sunlight all day, making it a favourite for photographers, dog walkers, and anyone looking for a scenic promenade.
Along the pier, you’ll find a handful of small, character-filled businesses including:
- The Harbour Arms Bar – loved for local and national ales
- Sargasso – a shorefront restaurant with a cult following
- Lighthouse Bar – perfect for sunset drinks
- Stone Pier Studio – a creative gallery space
- Michael Richardson Fine Art
- POM – wines, cocktails, and snacks
-
Dive – tacos and margaritas with sea views
